Gemini vs ChatGPT is the biggest head-to-head in AI assistants: Google’s Gemini against OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Both can chat, write, search the web, analyze files, create images and run deep research reports, and both have free plans. The real differences are in how the paid plans are built, what extras you get, and which ecosystem you already live in.
This research-based guide compares Gemini vs ChatGPT on pricing, free plans, research, apps, usage limits and value for money, using Google’s and OpenAI’s official pricing pages and help centers (US prices, checked October 2026).
Quick answer: In the Gemini vs ChatGPT choice, pick Gemini if you use Gmail, Docs and Drive or want cloud storage bundled in: Google AI Pro is $19.99/month and includes 5 TB of storage. Pick ChatGPT if you want projects, custom GPTs, scheduled tasks and Codex in one assistant: ChatGPT Plus is $20/month. Gemini vs ChatGPT Pricing
The plan ladders line up closely. Each company has a free plan, a cheap plan, a main plan around $20 and a top plan from about $100.

Gemini plans (Google AI)
Google’s Gemini subscriptions page (US) lists:
- Free ($0 with a Google Account): the Flash-Lite model, image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, Gems, Gemini Notebook and 15 GB of cloud storage.
- Google AI Plus ($4.99/month): 2x higher usage limits than Free, video generation, Daily Brief, 200 Google Flow credits and Gemini in Google apps.
- Google AI Pro ($19.99/month): 4x higher usage than Free, access to the Pro model and Gemini 4 Argon, 1,000 Flow credits, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, and Google Home Premium (Standard).
- Google AI Ultra ($99.99/month for 5x or $199.99/month for 20x the AI Pro limits): the highest access to Gemini 4 Argon, Gemini in Chrome auto browse, Project Genie, Jules and a YouTube Premium individual plan.

Google’s Google AI plans page adds the storage that comes with each plan: 400 GB with Plus, 5 TB with Pro and 20 TB or more with Ultra, shared across Gmail, Drive and Photos.

ChatGPT plans
OpenAI’s ChatGPT pricing page (US, checked October 2026) lists:
- Free ($0): unlimited text chats with GPT-6, subject to abuse guardrails, plus limited uploads, image creation, voice chats, deep research, memory and Codex access.
- Go ($8/month): more messages with tools, more uploads, more image creation, more voice chats and longer memory. OpenAI notes this plan may include ads.
- Plus ($20/month): advanced reasoning models with GPT-6, expanded deep research and memory, Projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs, expanded Codex usage and early access to new features.
- Pro (from $100/month): a choice of 3 usage tiers, Pro reasoning powered by GPT-6 Astra, longer Codex sessions, Dot (an always-on agent), unlimited and faster image creation and maximum deep research.
OpenAI’s Plus help article confirms the $20/month price, billed monthly, and says annual billing isn’t currently offered for Plus.

What a year costs
Over a year, the main plans are almost identical: Google AI Pro costs $239.88 and ChatGPT Plus $240. Gemini is cheaper at the budget level, and the top plans start at about the same price.

Which plan is better value?
Because the main plans cost almost the same, the extras decide value. Google’s AI plans page says AI Pro includes the Google Home Premium Standard plan at no cost, which it values at $10/month, plus 5 TB of storage and $10 in monthly Google Cloud credits through the Google Developer Program. AI Ultra adds a YouTube Premium individual plan and the Google Home Premium Advanced plan, which Google values at $20/month.
ChatGPT doesn’t bundle other services, but Plus puts more of its own tools in one place: Projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs, expanded deep research and Codex. If you would never use Google’s extras, ChatGPT Plus and Google AI Pro are simply two $20 assistants, and the better one is the one that fits your daily work.

Search and Deep Research
For research, Gemini vs ChatGPT is closer than it used to be. Both can search the web and both build longer research reports.
ChatGPT can search the web automatically or when you choose Search. OpenAI’s web search help page says web search is available on Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu, and even to people who aren’t signed in, with citations you can open to check the source.

Gemini Deep Research, according to Google, can browse up to hundreds of websites and, if you choose, your Gmail, Drive and Chat, then turn its findings into a multi-page report you can also get as an Audio Overview. Deep Research is listed on the Free plan, with more access on paid plans.

Google Apps vs ChatGPT’s Tools
This is where the Gemini vs ChatGPT choice becomes personal.
Gemini lives inside Google’s products. Paid Google AI plans add Gemini in Gmail and Docs, Google Home Premium, and Google One storage. AI Pro’s 5 TB is a lot of storage on its own; if you already pay Google for storage, AI Pro may replace that bill. Our best cloud storage services guide compares storage on its own.
ChatGPT is built around its own workspace: Projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs, Codex for coding and ChatGPT Work, plus extensions for Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Google Sheets, according to its pricing page.

Usage Limits and Context Windows
Neither company gives unlimited use of its best models on the main plan. Google’s Gemini Apps limits page says usage is compute-based and refreshes every 5 hours until you reach your weekly limit. AI Plus gets 2x the standard limits, AI Pro 4x, and AI Ultra 5x or 20x the AI Pro limits. The same page lists context windows of 32,000 tokens without a plan, 128,000 on AI Plus and 1 million on AI Pro and Ultra.

OpenAI says ChatGPT Free has unlimited text chats with GPT-6 subject to abuse guardrails, while tools, uploads and reasoning models have limits that rise with each plan. Its Plus help article adds that limits may vary based on demand.
Context windows compared
The context window decides how much text, such as a long PDF or a big chat, the assistant can work with at once. ChatGPT’s pricing page lists separate windows for its fast “Instant” models and its reasoning models, while Google lists one window per Gemini plan.
| Tier | Gemini | ChatGPT (Instant / Reasoning) |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 32,000 tokens | 27K / varies |
| Budget (AI Plus / Go) | 128,000 tokens | 54K / 256K |
| Main (AI Pro / Plus) | 1 million tokens | 54K / 256K |
| Top (AI Ultra / Pro) | 1 million tokens | 128K / 400K |
On paper, Gemini’s 1 million token window on AI Pro is the larger of the two main plans, which matters if you regularly upload long reports, books or large spreadsheets. ChatGPT’s page translates its numbers into pages: about 40 pages of text for Instant on Plus and about 320 pages for reasoning models.
Which models you get
Gemini’s free plan uses the Flash-Lite model, while AI Pro and Ultra add Google’s Pro model and Gemini 4 Argon, with Ultra getting the highest access. ChatGPT’s pricing page lists GPT-6 models on every plan, with more access and Pro reasoning (GPT-6 Astra) on the higher tiers. Both companies say model lists change often, so check the model picker in the app for what your plan includes today.
