Claude vs Gemini (2026): Which AI Assistant Should You Use?

Claude vs Gemini compared on pricing, free plans, AI models, coding, apps, usage limits and privacy — with current US prices checked on each official site in October 2026.

Claude vs Gemini is a question many people ask once they move past ChatGPT and start looking at the other big AI assistants. Claude is made by Anthropic and Gemini is made by Google. Both can chat, write, analyze files, search the web and help with code, and both have free plans and a main paid plan at about $20 a month.

The differences are in the details: what the free plan includes, which apps each assistant plugs into, what extras come with the subscription, how usage limits work and how your chats are used. This research-based guide compares Claude vs Gemini on all of that, using Anthropic’s and Google’s official pricing pages, help centers and privacy pages (checked October 2026).

Quick answer: In the Claude vs Gemini choice, pick Claude if you mainly write, analyze documents or code, and want Claude Code, Projects and a clear training opt-out in one plan (Pro is $20/month, or $17/month billed annually). Pick Gemini if you live in Gmail, Docs and Google Drive, want image and video generation, or want extras like 5 TB of storage bundled into Google AI Pro ($19.99/month). On a tight budget, Google AI Plus at $4.99/month is the cheapest paid option of the two.

What Are Claude and Gemini?

Claude is Anthropic’s AI assistant. You can use it on the web, on desktop and on mobile. According to Claude’s pricing page, even the free plan can search the web, create files, run code, remember context across conversations, connect to your apps and tools, and build Artifacts (interactive pages and documents you can share).

Gemini is Google’s AI assistant, formerly called Bard. Google’s Gemini overview describes it as an interface to a multimodal large language model that handles text, audio, images and more. Because it comes from Google, Gemini is also built into Google products such as Gmail, Docs and Chrome on paid plans.

Google’s own Gemini overview lists accuracy, bias and other known limitations of AI assistants.

Both companies are open about the limits. Google lists accuracy, bias, multiple perspectives and false positives as areas of ongoing work, and warns that Gemini can sometimes give confident but inaccurate answers. The same applies to Claude and every other AI assistant, so check important facts, numbers and sources before you rely on them.

Free Plans: Claude vs Gemini

In the Claude vs Gemini free-plan matchup, both are generous, but they lean in different directions.

Claude Free includes chat on web, desktop and mobile, web search, file creation and code execution, memory across conversations, app connectors, Artifacts, voice mode, Incognito chats, up to 5 Projects, and Claude Design, Slides and Docs. It uses the Sonnet and Haiku models; Opus and the Research tool need a paid plan.

Gemini Free includes the Gemini app with Google’s Flash-Lite model, image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live (voice), Canvas, Gems (custom assistants), limited access to the Google Flow creative studio, Gemini Notebook for research and writing, and the standard 15 GB of Google storage.

In short, Claude’s free plan is stronger for documents, files and code, while Gemini’s free plan is stronger for images and deep research. If you can’t decide, use both free plans for a week on your real tasks.

Claude vs Gemini: Features Compared

The graphic below compares the free plan and the main paid plan from each company, using only what the official plan pages list.

Claude vs Gemini feature comparison table for Claude Free, Claude Pro, Gemini Free and Google AI Pro
Feature by feature: Claude Free and Pro vs Gemini Free and Google AI Pro.

Research

Gemini offers Deep Research on the free plan. Claude’s Research feature starts with Pro, although Claude Free can still search the web inside a normal chat. If multi-step research reports matter to you and you don’t want to pay, Gemini has the edge. If you also want a research tool built for sourced answers, see our Perplexity vs ChatGPT comparison.

Writing and documents

Claude’s plans put a lot of weight on document work: Artifacts, Projects for organizing chats and files, file creation, and Claude Design, Slides and Docs on every plan. Gemini’s answer is Canvas, Gemini Notebook and, on paid plans, Gemini directly inside Gmail and Docs. For long-form writing tools beyond these two, our guide to the best AI writing tools covers more options.

Images and video

This is a clear difference. Gemini lists image generation and editing on its free plan and video generation on AI Plus and above, plus Google Flow credits for its AI creative studio. Claude’s pricing page does not list image or video generation, so if you create visual content, Gemini is the better fit.

AI Models and File Limits

For AI models, the Claude vs Gemini lineups look quite different. Claude’s pricing table lists three model families: Haiku and Sonnet on every plan, and Opus on Pro and Max. The context window, which is how much text Claude can consider at once, is listed as up to 1M tokens, varying by model, on every plan.

Claude’s plan table: Opus needs Pro or Max; context window up to 1M, varying by model.

On the Gemini side, the free plan uses Google’s Flash-Lite model, AI Plus adds the Flash model, and Google AI Pro and Ultra list access to Gemini 4 Argon along with Google’s Pro and Flash models. Google’s plans page also mentions file uploads of up to 1,500 pages, which is useful for long reports or large sets of documents.

Model names change quickly on both sides, so treat these as a snapshot and check the plan pages for the current lineup.

Coding and Agents

For coding, the Claude vs Gemini picture is simple. Claude Code, Anthropic’s coding agent, is included in every paid Claude plan and shares the same usage pool as your chats. Pro and Max also add Claude in Chrome, which can work in your browser, and the ability to hand off and schedule tasks.

Google AI Pro and Ultra include higher limits for Jules, Google’s asynchronous coding agent (in beta, English only), and rate limits for the agent model in Google Antigravity, its agentic development platform. Pro and Ultra also include Chrome auto browse, which can complete tasks in Chrome for you.

If coding is your main use, Claude’s bundle is easier to understand: one subscription covers chat and the coding agent. Developers who prefer Google’s tools may find Jules and Antigravity a better fit. For more ideas, see how to use AI for work.

Google and Microsoft Apps

Where you already work matters a lot in the Claude vs Gemini choice. Gemini on AI Plus and above works directly inside Gmail, Vids and other Google apps, and AI Pro adds Docs. It also bundles cloud storage: 400 GB on AI Plus, 5 TB on AI Pro and 20 TB or more on Ultra, shared across Gmail, Drive and Photos. AI Pro even includes YouTube Premium Lite where it is available.

Claude goes the other way. Pro and Max include Claude for Microsoft 365 and Claude for Outlook, and every plan, including Free, can use connectors to link Claude to your apps and tools. If your team runs on Microsoft 365, Claude fits more naturally. If your life runs on a Google Account, Gemini does.

Usage Limits on Claude and Gemini

On usage limits, Claude vs Gemini is closer than it looks: neither company publishes a fixed number of messages. Both use limits that depend on how long and complex your chats are, which model you choose and which features you use.

How Claude vs Gemini usage limits compare across Free, Pro, Max, AI Plus, AI Pro and AI Ultra plans
Usage multipliers as each company describes them; neither lists a fixed message count.
  • Claude: limits reset on a rolling five-hour window, and paid plans add weekly limits. Pro gives at least 5x the usage of Free per five-hour session, and Max gives 5x or 20x the Pro usage. On paid plans you can turn on usage credits to keep working at standard API rates.
  • Gemini: limits in the Gemini app are compute-based and refresh every five hours until you reach a weekly limit. AI Plus gives 2x the Free usage, AI Pro 4x, and Ultra 5x or 20x the AI Pro limits. You can extend limits by buying AI credits.

In practice, heavy users of either assistant will eventually hit a limit on the $20 plans. That is when the $100 and $200 tiers start to make sense.

Privacy: Are Your Chats Used for Training?

On privacy, Claude vs Gemini comes down to settings. Both companies let you control whether your chats help train their models, but they describe it differently.

Anthropic’s privacy article “Is my data used for model training?” says that, for Claude Free, Pro and Max, chats and coding sessions are used to improve its models if you choose to allow it, if a conversation is flagged for safety review, or if you explicitly opt in (for example, through a tester program). Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even when model improvement is turned on. The pricing table lists model training as “opt-out” on every individual plan.

Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub (last updated October 19, 2026) explains that turning off the Keep Activity setting stops future chats from being used to improve Google’s machine-learning technologies. Temporary chats, and chats you have while Keep Activity is off, are still kept with your account for 72 hours so Gemini can respond and so Google can protect users, including with help from human reviewers.
