How Do Perplexity and Claude Work?
The biggest Perplexity vs Claude difference is where each one starts. Perplexity’s help center describes it as an AI-powered search engine: you ask a question, it searches the web and gives a conversational answer backed by sources, with citations and links in each response.
Claude starts as a conversation with an AI model. It answers from Anthropic’s models and, according to Anthropic’s web search help page, can search the internet for up-to-date information. In the newer Claude experience there is no toggle: Claude searches the web when it helps.

In practice the two overlap more every year. Perplexity can write and create documents and apps; Claude can search and cite. The real difference is what each is optimized for and what the paid plans add.
Perplexity vs Claude Pricing
On price, Perplexity vs Claude is closer than most comparisons: the main paid plans cost the same with yearly billing, but the top tiers are very different.

Perplexity plans
Perplexity’s pricing page lists three individual plans:
- Free ($0): search with citations in every answer, access to basic AI models, good for limited daily use and simpler questions.
- Pro ($17/month when billed annually): expanded Computer access, 4,000 bonus credits, Deep Research, access to top AI models with the option to choose between them, and the ability to create documents and apps.
- Max ($167/month when billed annually): maximum Computer usage, 10,000 monthly credits plus 35,000 bonus credits, expert-level research, frontier models, the highest usage limits and priority access to new features.

Perplexity’s plan guide also lists Education Pro at $10/month for students and educators verified through SheerID, and Enterprise Pro from $40 per seat per month. The prices shown are for annual billing, so paying month to month may cost more; check the checkout page before you subscribe.
Claude plans
Anthropic’s Claude pricing page (checked October 2026, in US dollars) lists:
- Free ($0): chat on web, desktop and mobile; web search; creating files and running code; memory; connecting apps and tools; Artifacts; and Claude Design, Slides and Docs.
- Pro ($17/month with the annual discount, $200 billed up front, or $20 billed monthly): more usage, Claude Code, Research, Projects, more Claude models, and Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365.
- Max (from $100/month): a choice of 5x or 20x more usage than Pro, higher output limits, early access to new features, priority access at busy times and $100 to $200 a month in API credits.

Anthropic notes that usage limits apply on every plan and that prices don’t include tax. Max is billed monthly, while Pro can be paid monthly or yearly.
Perplexity vs Claude free plans
If you don’t want to pay yet, both free plans are useful but limited in different ways.
- Perplexity Free gives you search with citations in every answer and the automatic “Best” model option, plus a limited number of Pro Searches. You can’t pick an advanced model yourself, and file uploads and web answers are limited compared with Pro.
- Claude Free gives you the Sonnet and Haiku models, web search, file creation with code execution, memory, connectors and up to five Projects. Opus, Research and Claude Code need a paid plan.
Claude’s pricing table also lists model training as opt-out on every individual plan, so check your privacy settings whichever tool you use. For light use, many people find Perplexity Free enough for quick lookups and Claude Free enough for occasional writing help; heavy daily use is where the paid plans earn their price.
What a year costs
Over 12 months, the main plans cost almost exactly the same. The big gap is at the top: Claude Max starts at less than Perplexity Max.

Research and Citations
For research, Perplexity vs Claude is the most important comparison, because it is what Perplexity is built for.
Perplexity searches the web for every question and, as its pricing page FAQ says, every answer includes inline citations that show where each claim comes from. Pro and Max add premium data sources for finance and market research, including PitchBook, Statista and S&P Capital IQ. Deep Research on Pro builds longer reports from more sources.
Claude has two levels. Web search is for quick factual questions. Research, available on paid plans, runs multiple searches that build on each other and can also look through connected tools such as Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Docs. Anthropic says Research runs on Claude Opus 5.5, whichever model you picked for the chat.

Anthropic’s guide on when to use web search, extended thinking and research says Research suits information gathering that needs five or more tool calls over one to three minutes, producing a report with citations.

Writing, Coding and Everyday Work
Outside of search, the Perplexity vs Claude picture flips.
Claude is built as a general assistant. Its paid plans include Projects (workspaces with their own files and instructions), Claude Code for programming, Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365, and file creation with code execution. Anthropic’s Projects help page says free users can create up to five projects, and paid plans can expand project knowledge with retrieval when it gets large.
Perplexity can draft, summarize and create documents and apps on Pro, and its Computer agent can take on longer tasks using credits. But its plans are built around search and research rather than long writing or coding sessions.

Here Perplexity vs Claude has an unusual twist: Perplexity Pro includes a Claude model.
Perplexity’s help page on advanced AI models (a snapshot as of October 17, 2026) lists Claude Sonnet 5.5 on Pro and Max, with Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Fable 5.1 on Max only.
